Discord file size limits
From Discord’s File Attachments FAQ, read on 26 October 2026. Discord says it is experimenting with limits, so check there if an upload is refused.
| Account | Upload limit |
|---|---|
| Free | 20 MB (raised from 10 MB in August 2026) |
| Nitro Basic | 50 MB |
| Nitro | Up to 1 GB |
8 MB is the old Discord limit and is still a common target for chats, forums and email. This tool makes an H.264 MP4, which is one of the video formats Discord lists.
How long can an 8 MB video be?
The size of a video is its bitrate times its length, so a longer clip gets fewer bits per second. For a 1080p, 30 fps clip with sound, this is what the tool picks at 8 MB on Auto:
| Length | Total bitrate | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| 30 seconds | about 2 Mbps | 720p, clean |
| 1 minute | about 1 Mbps | 540p, good |
| 2 minutes | about 500 kbps | 360p, softer detail |
| 5 minutes | about 200 kbps | 240p at 24 fps, visibly blocky |
FAQ
How do I compress a video to 8MB?
Choose your video above, leave the target on 8 MB and press Compress. The tool works out a bitrate from the video’s length so the file lands just under 8 MB, picks a resolution that suits that bitrate, and encodes an MP4. If the first try comes out over the target, it runs again with a lower bitrate automatically.
What is Discord’s file size limit?
Discord’s help center says free accounts can upload up to 20 MB as of August 2026 (it was 10 MB before), Nitro Basic 50 MB and Nitro up to 1 GB. Discord also says it is experimenting with limits, so some accounts may see different numbers.
Why does my compressed video look blurry?
A fixed file size means a fixed number of bits. Spread over a long video, each second gets fewer of them, so detail is lost. To get a sharper result, trim the clip, choose a bigger target, or tick Remove audio to give the picture a little more room.
Does this tool upload my video?
No. Your video is read and encoded by your browser on your own device, and the MP4 is created there too. Your video is never sent to a server. You can check: open your browser’s developer tools, go to the Network tab, and compress a video. No request carries it. The only request the page makes on its own is an anonymous page-view count with no cookies and no file data (see privacy).
Which formats and browsers work?
MP4 and MOV files encode fastest in Chrome, Edge and other browsers with WebCodecs, usually faster than real time. WebM, MKV and anything the fast path can’t read use a slower fallback encoder, which downloads once (about 32 MB) and then runs offline. The output is always an H.264 MP4, with AAC audio (Opus in the few browsers that can’t encode AAC). Files up to 500 MB are accepted; phones may run out of memory sooner.
What does MB mean here?
We count 1 MB as 1,000,000 bytes, the smaller of the two common definitions, so a file made for “8 MB” fits under an 8 MB limit whichever way a site counts.
