    How to recolor an image

    1. Choose an image (JPG, PNG, WebP or GIF), or press Try with an example.
    2. Click the color you want to change in the picture, or pick it from the list of colors found in the image. You can also type its hex code.
    3. Choose what happens to it: Replace it with a new color, Make transparent to remove it, or Keep only this to turn everything else grey.
    4. Adjust Tolerance until the pink highlight covers just the area you want, then raise Soft edge if the border looks jagged.
    5. Press Add another color to change more colors, then Download.

    What each setting does

    • Tolerance is how far a shade can be from the color you picked and still count. It is measured as a color difference in CIELAB (Delta E 2000), which follows what your eye sees: about 2 is barely visible, 10 is a clear difference, and 30 or more takes in quite different shades.
    • Soft edge fades the change out over the next few steps past the tolerance, so borders and anti-aliased edges blend instead of looking cut out.
    • Keep shading and texture moves every matched pixel by the same amount in CIELAB, from the picked color to the new one. Light and dark parts stay light and dark, so folds, shadows and gradients survive. Turn it off to paint the area one flat color.
    • Make transparent sets the matched pixels' alpha to zero (partly transparent inside the soft edge). Save as PNG to keep the transparency.
    • Keep only this leaves the matched color as it is and turns every other pixel into a grey of the same lightness. Add several Keep changes to keep more than one color.
    • Every change matches against the original colors, so one change never catches the result of another.

    FAQ

How do I remove a color from an image?

Choose your image, click the color you want to remove, and press Make transparent. Raise Tolerance until every shade of that color is caught (turn on the pink highlight to see it), then download as PNG. The removed color becomes transparent, so the picture can go on any background.

How do I change one color to another without losing the shading?

Press Replace, choose the new color, and leave Keep shading and texture on. The tool moves each matched pixel by the same step in CIELAB, so a shadow stays a shadow and a highlight stays a highlight, just in the new color. Most simple color pickers fill the area flat instead, which makes it look painted on.

Can I remove a color from a JPG?

Yes. JPG files can't hold transparency, so download the result as PNG. JPG compression also blurs colors slightly at edges, so a Tolerance of 20 to 35 and a little Soft edge usually work better than an exact match.

How do I make an image black and white except one color?

Click the color you want to keep, choose Keep only this, and adjust Tolerance. Everything else becomes grey with its brightness kept. To keep two or more colors, press Add another color and set each one to Keep only this.

Can I remove a white or green background?

If the background is one fairly even color, such as a white backdrop, a logo on a plain background or a green screen, click it and press Make transparent. Colors inside the subject that are close to the background color are removed too, so lower the Tolerance if that happens. For a busy photo background, a background remover tool is the better choice: this tool works by color, not by recognising objects, and it doesn't use AI.

Can I change several colors at once?

Yes. Press Add another color for each extra change. Each one has its own color, action, tolerance and soft edge, and all of them are applied together to the download.

Is it free? Is there a watermark?

It is free, with no sign-up and no watermark. The download is the same size as your image (very large images are worked on at 4096 px on the longest side).

Does this tool upload my image?

No. The picture is read, recolored and saved by your browser on your own device. Your image is never sent to a server. You can check: open your browser's developer tools, go to the Network tab, and use the tool. No request carries your image. The only request the page makes on its own is an anonymous page-view count with no cookies and no file data (see privacy).
