What goes in an .ico file

An .ico is a small container. It holds several square images of the same icon, and the program showing it picks the size that fits. Each image here is 32-bit, so transparency is kept.

UseSizes to include
Windows app, shortcut or folder16, 24, 32, 48 and 256 px — Microsoft's stated bare minimum
Website favicon.ico16, 32 and 48 px is a common, small set

Web app manifestPNGs of at least 192 × 192 and 512 × 512 for Chromium

What's in the favicon package

  • favicon.ico with the sizes you ticked
  • apple-touch-icon.png, 180 × 180, on a solid background
  • icon-192.png and icon-512.png
  • site.webmanifest that lists the two PNGs
  • favicon-tags.html with the <link> tags to paste into your page's <head>

Upload the files to your site's root folder. The tags assume they sit there.

FAQ

How do I convert a PNG to ICO?

Choose your PNG above, keep the Windows preset or tick the sizes you want, and press Download .ico. You get one .ico file with every ticked size inside. If your PNG isn't square, pick Fit to keep all of it with see-through space around it, or Fill to crop the middle.

Can I convert a JPG to an icon?

Yes, the same way. A JPG has no transparency, so the icon will be a filled square. Use Fill to crop it square, and Rounded corners if you want softer edges; the cut-away corners become transparent.

What sizes should an .ico have?

For a Windows app, Microsoft says to include at the bare minimum 16, 24, 32, 48 and 256 px, so Windows only scales the icon down, never up. For a website favicon, 16, 32 and 48 px keeps the file small. ICO images go up to 256 × 256.

Does the .ico keep transparency?

Yes. Every image is stored as 32-bit with an alpha channel. By default each image is a PNG inside the .ico, which Windows has supported since Windows Vista. If old software can't open it, switch "Image format inside the .ico" to Bitmap; the 256 px image stays PNG, as is usual.

How do I convert an ICO back to PNG?

Drop the .ico on the tool. Every image inside it is listed with its size and format, and you can save each one as a PNG or all of them as a zip. The largest one is also loaded, so you can make a new .ico with different sizes from it.

How do I make a favicon for my website?

Choose Favicon package, pick your image and download the zip. Put the files in your site's root and paste the tags from favicon-tags.html into the <head>. The tags use rel="icon" for the .ico, rel="apple-touch-icon" for iPhone and iPad home screens, and rel="manifest" for the web manifest. Use rel="icon", not the old shortcut icon.

How do I use my .ico as a Windows 11 icon?

Download with the Windows preset. For a shortcut, right-click it, open Properties, choose Change Icon and browse to your .ico. For a folder, open its Properties, go to Customize and choose Change Icon.

What is a blank .ico for?

A blank, fully transparent .ico is a placeholder: a site or app that expects an icon file gets a valid one that shows nothing. Use the 16, 32 or 16 + 32 buttons under the drop area.

Does this tool upload my image?

No. Your image is read, resized and packed into the .ico or zip by your browser, on your device. You can check: open your browser's developer tools, go to the Network tab and convert an image. No request carries it. The only request the page makes on its own is an anonymous page-view count with no cookies and no file data (see privacy).
