Low Quality Image Maker

Make any picture or meme look low quality on purpose: crush the JPEG quality, pixelate it, cut the colors, add noise or deep fry it. The preview updates as you drag.

What each setting does

  • JPEG quality sets how hard the picture is compressed. Low values give the blocky squares and smeared colors of a bad JPG.
  • Times re-saved saves the JPG again and again, the way a meme gets worse every time it's reposted.
  • Pixelation shrinks the picture and blows it back up, so you see big square pixels (or a soft blur with Smooth on).
  • Colors cuts the number of shades per channel, which gives banding like an old GIF.
  • Saturation and contrast pushed far up give the "deep fried" meme look.

FAQ

How do I make an image low quality?

Choose a picture above and press Low quality or Very low quality. To go further, drag JPEG quality down and raise Times re-saved. Then download it. JPG gives the smallest file; PNG saves exactly what you see in the preview.

How do you deep fry an image?

Press Deep fried. It pushes saturation and contrast far up, adds noise, and re-saves the picture as a very low quality JPG several times. Turn the Saturation, Contrast and Noise sliders up or down to taste.

How do I pixelate a picture?

Drag the Pixelation slider to the right. At 10, every square in the result is 10 × 10 pixels of one color. Tick Smooth if you want a blurry low-resolution look instead of hard squares.

Why do low quality JPGs look blocky?

JPEG compresses a picture in small squares of 8 × 8 pixels. At low quality each square keeps only its rough shading, so the edges between squares show and fine detail turns into smudges. Saving again adds more loss on top.

Will the file get smaller?

Usually, if you download as JPG at a low quality: the size of the JPG is shown under the preview before you download. A PNG of a low quality picture can still be large, because PNG doesn't throw detail away. Picking a smaller Size makes either format smaller.

Does this tool upload my image?

No. The picture is read, changed and saved by your browser on your own device. Your image is never sent to a server. You can check: open your browser's developer tools, go to the Network tab, and use the tool. No request carries your image. The only request the page makes on its own is an anonymous page-view count with no cookies and no file data (see privacy).
