Discord file size limits
Discord's File Attachments FAQ puts the upload limit at 20 MB on a free account, 50 MB with Nitro Basic and up to 1 GB with Nitro. Below: those limits, server-boost limits, and the sizes for avatars, banners, emoji, stickers and icons. Every number comes from Discord's own help center and links to it.
The File Attachments FAQ (last edited by Discord on 30 Sep 2026) says the free limit went from 10 MB to 20 MB in August 2026. Three other Discord help pages still show older numbers: "How do I upload images and GIFs?" says files "have to be less than 10MB", the Nitro FAQ asks "Why do I need Nitro to upload more than 10MB of files?", and the Account Caps table lists 10 MB (free), 50 MB (Nitro Basic) and 500 MB (Nitro). This page follows the File Attachments FAQ because it is the one that describes the change. Discord also says it is "experimenting with various file upload size limits", so your account may see a different number.

A limit is per file. Discord checks the size before compression on desktop and, since the August 2026 change, on mobile too. Its FAQ warns that on Android "you may hit the size limit more often than you did previously". If a video is too big, compress it to a target size first.
Server Boost upload limits
A boosted server raises the limit for everyone, but only inside that server.
| Server level | Upload limit in that server | Source |
|---|---|---|
| No level / Level 1 (2 boosts) | No upload perk listed. The Account Caps table shows 10 MB for both, the older free figure. | Source: Server Boosting FAQ; Discord Account Caps, Server Caps, and More, read 27 Oct 2026 |

Making emoji or stickers? The Twitch Emote Resizer also exports a size-checked Discord emoji. For a round or square avatar, use the PFP Cropper.

|---|---|---|
| No level | 50 | 5 |
| Level 1 (2 boosts) | 100 | 15 |

Source: Server Boosting FAQ; Custom Stickers FAQ; How to Add Custom Emojis on Discord, read 27 Oct 2026. The emoji article also mentions "an extra 50 slots" for animated emoji tied to Nitro or Nitro Basic. Its wording doesn't make clear how that combines with boost levels.
Which file types can you upload?
Discord's File Attachments FAQ says "a wide variety of file types" can be uploaded and gives these as the most common: JPEG, PDF, MP3, MOV and MP4 (video encoded with H.264, HEVC/H.265 or AV1). It doesn't publish a full list of allowed or blocked types. Files that aren't images, such as a PDF or DOC, show as an embed without a preview. An image over 20 MB is also shown as a download instead of inline. Source: File Attachments FAQ, read 27 Oct 2026
Changelog
Discord's limits
- August 2026: free upload limit raised to 20 MB, "up from 10MB". Mobile now checks size before compression, as desktop already did. Both are from the File Attachments FAQ.
- Before August 2026: 10 MB free, per the same FAQ. Three Discord help pages still show 10 MB (see the note at the top).
- 8 MB: an older free limit that many tools and posts still quote. We found no current Discord help page that states it, so we give no date for it.
This page
- 27 Oct 2026: first published. Every number read from support.discord.com on this date.
- 27 Oct 2026: added the emoji pixel size (up to 128 × 128, shown at 32 × 32) from Discord's "How to Add Emojis on Discord".
Questions
What is Discord's file size limit without Nitro?
20 MB per file, according to Discord's File Attachments FAQ (read 27 Oct 2026). It was 10 MB before August 2026. Some older Discord help pages still say 10 MB.
Why won't my video send when it's under 20 MB?
Discord checks the original file size before any compression. Discord says Android users "may hit the size limit more often" for this reason. Discord is also testing different limits on some accounts. Shrinking the file with the 8MB Video Compressor (you can pick 20 MB or any target) usually fixes it.
Does boosting a server raise the upload limit?
Yes, inside that server only: 50 MB for everyone at Level 2 and 100 MB at Level 3. Some servers can also buy a 250 MB option with 5 boosts, as part of an experiment.
What size should a Discord emoji be?
Up to 128 × 128 px (Discord resizes it to 32 × 32), under 256 KB, in JPEG, PNG, GIF or WEBP. Stickers are different: exactly 320 × 320 px and up to 512 KB. Source: How to Add Emojis on Discord.
What size is a Discord profile picture?
Discord's help center doesn't publish avatar dimensions or a file size. It lists PNG and GIF as the supported types, and animated GIFs need Nitro. Profile banners must be at least 680 × 240 px and under 10 MB.
