How to deep fry a meme
To deep fry a meme, push saturation and contrast far past normal, sharpen it hard, add noise, then save it as a very low quality JPEG over and over until it turns blotchy and blocky. A bulge, a red-orange glow, lens flares and emoji like ๐ ๐ ๐ฏ ๐ฅ are the usual extras.
Fastest route: open the Image Deep Fryer, drop in the picture and press Extra crispy.
What makes a meme look deep fried
A deep-fried meme is degraded on purpose. Each edit adds one part of the look:
| Edit | What it does to the picture |
|---|---|
| Saturation way up | Colours turn neon and skin goes orange |
| Contrast way up | Shadows go black, highlights blow out to white |
| Heavy sharpening | Every edge and speck of grain looks crunchy |
| Noise | Random grain that later JPEG saves smear into blotches |
| Low quality JPEG, saved many times | Blocky squares, colour smears and halos around edges |
| Red glow, bulge, flares, emoji | The extras: a hot cast, a fisheye swelling, glowing eyes, ๐ ๐ |
The JPEG step does most of the damage. JPEG is a lossy format: each save at low quality throws detail away, and saving the already-damaged file again throws away more.
How to deep fry a meme, step by step
These steps work in any photo editor that has the sliders, and they're what the Image Deep Fryer does for you in one go.
- Start with the picture. Add any top and bottom meme text first, so it gets fried along with the image.
- Raise saturation well past where it looks good. In the Deep Fryer, 100% is normal and the Medium level uses 250%.
- Raise contrast until the shadows crush. Medium uses 170%.
- Sharpen hard, then add a little noise.
- Optional extras: a red-orange tint, a bulge on the face, lens flares on the eyes, a few emoji.
- Export as JPEG at a very low quality (around 10 out of 100), open the saved file and export it again. Repeat 3 or 4 times.
- Still not crispy? Run the whole thing a second time on the fried file.
Settings for four fry levels
These are the exact values behind the four buttons in the Image Deep Fryer. Use them as a recipe in your own editor, or as a starting point for the sliders.
| Setting | Light | Medium | Extra crispy | Nuclear |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Saturation (100% = normal) | 170% | 250% | 340% | 500% |
| Contrast (100% = normal) | 130% | 170% | 220% | 260% |
| Sharpen (0 to 300) | 30 | 60 | 110 | 150 |
| Noise (0 to 100) | 8 | 18 | 30 | 45 |
| Red glow (0 to 100) | off | 20 | 45 | 80 |
| JPEG quality (1 to 100) | 30 | 12 | 6 | 4 |
| Times re-saved as JPEG | 2 | 4 | 7 | 10 |
| Bulge (0 to 100) | off | off | 35 | 70 |
| Emoji | 0 | 3 | 5 | 9 |
| Lens flares | 0 | 0 | 2 | 4 |
Worked example: Extra crispy multiplies saturation by 3.4 and contrast by 2.2, then saves the picture as a quality 6 JPEG seven times in a row, with a bulge of 35, five emoji and two flares on top. Nuclear goes further on every line and re-saves ten times at quality 4.
Tips for a better fry
- Keep the joke readable. Text and faces should survive; if they don't, step down a level or lower the JPEG passes.
- Put the bulge on the face. In the Deep Fryer, click the picture where you want it.
- JPG or PNG? Downloading a JPG adds one more round of crunch and gives the smallest file. PNG saves exactly what you see in the preview.
- GIFs can be fried too. The Deep Fryer fries every frame of an animated GIF with the same settings and keeps the timing, up to 300 frames and 640 px on the longest side.
Do it with the free Image Deep Fryer

- Press Light, Medium, Extra crispy or Nuclear, then fine-tune the sliders.
- Add a bulge, emoji, flares or meme text, and download.
It runs in your browser: your picture isn't uploaded, and there's no watermark.

What is a deep-fried meme?
A meme edited on purpose to look burnt and degraded: extreme saturation and contrast, crunchy sharpening, grain, and blocky artifacts from being saved as a low quality JPEG again and again, plus extras such as a bulge, glowing eyes and emoji.
Can you deep fry a meme without an app?
Yes. The Image Deep Fryer runs in a web browser, so there's nothing to install. Any photo editor with saturation, contrast, sharpen and JPEG quality controls works too, following the steps above.
How do I make an image crunchy?
Sharpen it hard, add a little noise, then save it as a low quality JPEG several times. The sharpening makes every edge and speck of grain stand out, and the repeated JPEG saves turn that grain into blocks and smears. In the Image Deep Fryer, raise Sharpen and Noise and lower JPEG quality; Extra crispy uses sharpen 110, noise 30 and seven saves at quality 6.
How do I make it even more deep fried?
Lower the JPEG quality, raise the number of re-saves, or download the fried picture and fry the file again. Each round of low quality JPEG saves adds more blocks and smears.
Can I un-fry a deep-fried image?
No. JPEG compression is lossy, so the detail thrown away by each low quality save is gone from that file. Keep the original if you might want it back.
Can I deep fry a GIF?
Yes. In the Image Deep Fryer, drop in an animated GIF and choose GIF as the format. Every frame is fried with the same settings and the animation keeps its timing.
