What size is a Twitch emote and a Discord emoji?

By CrispKit · Last updated

A Twitch emote is a square image at 28 × 28, 56 × 56 and 112 × 112 pixels, or one square file from 112 to 4096 px that Twitch resizes for you. A Discord emoji can be up to 128 × 128 px, under 256 KB, and Discord shows it at 32 × 32.

Sub badges are 18, 36 and 72 px; Discord stickers are exactly 320 × 320 px. The Twitch Emote Resizer makes all of them from one image.

Twitch emotes and badges must be square with a transparent background. Twitch's emote pages also say GIF emotes must not flash or flicker more than 3 times in 1 second.

Twitch emote size, explained

Twitch's own guide reminds creators that "you only have 28px to work with", so design for the smallest size. The 56 and 112 px files are the same picture at 2× and 4× that size.

You can upload them two ways:

Worked example: one drawing, three sizes

Start from a 1000 × 1000 px drawing. To make the three manual sizes, scale it by 112 ÷ 1000 = 0.112, 56 ÷ 1000 = 0.056 and 28 ÷ 1000 = 0.028. At 28 px the whole drawing is 28 pixels across, so a 1 px outline in the 1000 px file shrinks to about 0.03 px and disappears. Draw outlines and features thick, or crop in close on the face.

Each of those files must be under 100 KB. The Twitch Emote Resizer shows each file's size next to its limit, counting 1 KB as 1000 bytes, so a file it marks as passing is under the limit whichever way Twitch counts.

Discord emoji size, explained

Discord accepts custom emojis up to 128 × 128 px and resizes them to 32 × 32. The file has to be under 256 KB, in JPEG, PNG, GIF or WEBP; animated emojis are GIFs. Discord's help page says that for the best resolution you can upload at up to 128 × 128 px.

Every server can add up to 50 static custom emojis by default. Emoji names must be at least 2 characters, using only letters, numbers and underscores.

How to make Discord emojis bigger

You can't change the size Discord shows custom emojis at in a normal message. But send a message that contains only emoji, with no other text, and Discord shows them larger: it calls these "wumboji". Up to 27 fit in one message before they shrink back. They don't enlarge in Compact mode.

Do it with the free Twitch Emote Resizer

  1. Open the Twitch Emote Resizer and choose a PNG, JPG, WebP or GIF.
  2. Crop to square or fit the whole image, then check the chat preview at real size.
  3. Tick the sizes you need (Twitch emotes at 112, 56 and 28 px and a 128 px Discord emoji are on by default; sub badges at 72, 36 and 18 px and a 320 px sticker are one click away) and download the zip. Each file is checked against its limit.

Animated GIFs stay animated, and by default are kept to Twitch's 60 frames. Resizing happens in your browser; your image isn't uploaded.
