The SVG uses Arial or the viewer's sans-serif font, so the text can look slightly different from the PNG.

Display ad sizes

The IAB column is from the IAB Tech Lab's New Standard Ad Unit Portfolio (version 1.1, July 2017). It lists the classic fixed sizes as "transition" sizes, allowed for now while the IAB moves to flexible, aspect-ratio-based ads, and it removed a few sizes ("delisted"). The last name column is from Google's AdSense guide to ad sizes.

YouTube image sizes

Each row is quoted from the YouTube Help page linked next to it. 1024 × 576 is not on any of these pages: YouTube's banner minimum is 2048 × 1152.

How to make a placeholder image

  1. Type a width and height in pixels, or pick a standard size such as 728 × 90 or 300 × 250.
  2. Choose the background colour. Keep the size text, type your own, or pick None for a plain solid colour image.
  3. Add a border or corner-to-corner cross lines if you want the classic "image goes here" look.
  4. Pick PNG, JPG, WebP or SVG and download. The file is exactly the size you set.

Made on your device, not hosted

Some placeholder services give you an image URL to paste into your page. This page doesn't: it draws the image in your browser and hands you the file. Nothing is uploaded, and we don't host your image, so there is no link that can break or slow down later.

If you need something you can paste straight into code, open Code for developers. The SVG markup and the data URI work without any server.

Which format to pick

  • PNG: exact colours and sharp text. The safe default.
  • WebP: also exact. This page writes lossless WebP itself, so colours come out exactly as chosen in Chrome, Firefox and Safari in normal (non-private) windows.
  • JPG: works everywhere, but JPEG compression can shift a colour by a step or two and soften the text edges.
  • SVG: a few hundred bytes and sharp at any zoom. The text uses the viewer's Arial or sans-serif font.

One exception for PNG, JPG and WebP: browsers that guard against canvas fingerprinting can add small random noise to the pixels a page reads back from a canvas. Brave does this by default, Firefox 120+ and Safari 17+ do it in private windows, and Firefox does it everywhere when its "resist fingerprinting" setting is on. Output is exact in normal (non-private) windows, and if the page detects noise when you download, it warns you. SVG is written as text, so it is never affected.

Limits

  • Width and height from 1 to 8192 px, and no more than 16,777,216 pixels in total (for example 4096 × 4096, or 8192 × 2048).
  • Images are always opaque: there is no transparent background option.
  • One line of text, in a bold sans-serif font.
  • This isn't a resizer. To fit your own photo to a size, use a crop or resize tool.

FAQ

What are the dimensions of a 728x90 banner?

728 pixels wide and 90 pixels tall. Google AdSense calls it a leaderboard. The IAB's 2017 ad portfolio lists 728 × 90 as the fixed size for its 8x1 Leaderboard, marked "in transition" to a flexible 8:1 ad.

What aspect ratio is 728x90?

728 ÷ 90 is about 8.09, so roughly 8:1. The exact reduced ratio is 364:45. That's why the IAB groups it with its 8x1 horizontal ads.

Is 728x90 a mobile size?

It isn't one of the phone sizes. The IAB lists 320 × 50 and 300 × 50 as smartphone banner sizes, and Google AdSense calls 320 × 50 a mobile leaderboard and 320 × 100 a large mobile banner. All of them are in the size table above.

Where can I find placeholder images?

Make one here at any size. You get a real PNG, JPG, WebP or SVG file, or SVG code to paste into your page. Nothing depends on a hosted URL.

What aspect ratio is 1024 x 576?

16:9, the same shape as 1920 × 1080 and 1280 × 720 (1024 ÷ 64 = 16 and 576 ÷ 64 = 9). Turned upright, 576 × 1024 is 9:16.

How do I make a 1024 x 576 image?

Pick 1024 × 576 above (or type it), choose a colour and text, and download. It's 589,824 pixels in total. To fit a photo to 1024 × 576 instead, you need a crop or resize tool.

Is 1024 x 576 the YouTube banner size?

No. YouTube Help says a channel banner must be at least 2048 × 1152 px (16:9), with text and logos inside a 1235 × 338 px safe area at that size, and recommends 2560 × 1440 px. 1024 × 576 is the same 16:9 shape at half the width and height, so it's too small to upload as a banner.

How do I make a solid colour image, like 1920x1080 white?

Set 1920 × 1080, pick white (#FFFFFF), and choose None under Text. Download PNG or WebP for an exact colour: every pixel will be #FFFFFF, unless your browser alters canvas pixels to block fingerprinting (the page tells you if it does). SVG is exact in every browser.

What size is a banner?

It depends on where it goes. On websites, common ad banners are 728 × 90, 468 × 60 and 320 × 50 pixels (see the table). Printed vinyl banners are measured in feet or inches, not pixels: to work out the pixels for a print, use the pixels to inches converter.

Is anything uploaded?

No. The image is drawn in your browser with the canvas API, and the file is saved straight from your device. The page address and the settings link only hold the size, colours, text mode, font size and line settings you chose. Text you type is never put in the address.
