How to trim an MP3 online

  1. Open your file. Press Choose audio, or drop an MP3, WAV, M4A, OGG or FLAC file on the box. Video files work too: the tool takes their sound.
  2. Set the start and end. Drag the two handles on the waveform, or type the times, such as 0:12.5 or 72.25. Press Play result to hear exactly what you will get.
  3. Add fades if you like. Fade in and Fade out ramp the volume at the start and end of the result, up to 10 seconds each.
  4. Download. Choose MP3 or WAV, press Create file, then Download.

Audio silence remover

Tick Remove silent gaps to cut the pauses out of a voice recording, podcast, lecture or voice note. Every stretch that stays quieter than the level you set for longer than the minimum gap is cut, and the shaded parts on the waveform show exactly what goes. The info line says how many gaps were found and how much time they add up to.

  • Silence is quieter than: the level below which sound counts as silence, in dB below full scale. −45 dB suits most recordings; raise it towards −30 dB if room noise or hum keeps the gaps from being found, lower it if quiet words are being cut.
  • Minimum gap to remove: shorter pauses are left alone, so normal gaps between words stay.
  • Silence to keep at each cut: a little quiet is left on each side of a cut so speech doesn’t sound chopped. Silence at the very start and end is cut down to this length too.

What you get

  • Exact cuts in WAV. Start and end are rounded to the nearest sample, and the WAV holds exactly those samples. From a 16-bit WAV, the 16-bit WAV download is bit-for-bit the same audio, just shorter. The download panel shows the sample count.
  • MP3 encoded on your device. The MP3 is made with the LAME encoder, which the page downloads once (about 32 MB) the first time you choose MP3. An MP3 is always re-encoded, so it is a little less exact than the WAV, and MP3 files can carry a few milliseconds of encoder padding.
  • The same channels and sample rate. Mono stays mono and stereo stays stereo. The file keeps your audio’s sample rate (an MP3 of audio above 48,000 Hz is made at 48,000 or 44,100 Hz).
  • Straight cuts. Where a part is cut out, the two sides are joined directly, with no crossfade. Silence removal joins inside the quiet parts, so the joins stay quiet.

FAQ

How do I trim an MP3 file?

Open it here, drag the left handle to where the part you want starts and the right handle to where it ends, press Play result to check, then choose MP3 and press Create file and Download.

How do I cut out the middle of a song?

Select the part you don’t want with the two handles, then press Cut it out. The result is the part before the selection joined to the part after it.

How do I remove silence from audio?

Tick Remove silent gaps. Leave the level at −45 dB and the minimum gap at 0.5 s to start with, look at the shaded parts on the waveform, and press Play result. Adjust the level if too much or too little is cut.

Does trimming lower the quality?

Not with WAV: the samples are copied as they are (16-bit sources stay exact in 16-bit WAV; 32-bit float keeps anything your browser decoded). MP3 is re-encoded, so a little detail is lost each time; choose 320 kbps to lose the least, or WAV to lose nothing.

Can I make a ringtone with it?

Yes. Select the 20 to 30 seconds you want, add a short fade in and fade out, and download an MP3. Moving it onto your phone and setting it as a ringtone is done in your phone’s own settings.

Does this tool upload my audio?

No. Your file is opened, cut and saved by your browser on your own device and is never sent to a server. You can check: open your browser’s developer tools, go to the Network tab, and make a file. The page counts visits and finished downloads (tool name only) with analytics that sets no cookies, and no audio is ever sent (see privacy).

Is there a length limit?

No fixed limit; your device’s memory is the limit. The whole file is held in memory, uncompressed, while you work, so files over 30 minutes get a warning first.
