Remove Metadata from Video

See what your video says about you, then strip it: GPS location, recording dates, camera make and model, software and encoder tags. The video and sound are not re-encoded, so quality and file size stay the same. Works with MP4, MOV, M4V and WebM, and the file never leaves your device.

Your video never leaves your device. It’s read and cleaned in your browser. We count visits and finished downloads (tool name only) with analytics that sets no cookies.

Removes every tag listed, sets the dates to zero and wipes free space in the header. Video and sound data are copied as they are.

How to remove metadata from a video

  1. Press Choose video and pick the file, or drop it on the box. The page lists the metadata it finds, with any GPS location first.
  2. Press Remove metadata. It takes a second or two, even for a large file, because the video itself isn’t processed.
  3. The page reads the new file back and tells you if anything is left. Press Download video.

What gets removed

MetadataMP4, MOV, M4VWebM, MKV
GPS locationiPhone location keys, Android and QuickTime ©xyz, 3GPP loci, XMPLocation tags
DatesCreation and modification times in the movie, track and media headers, date tagsDateUTC and date tags
Device and softwareMake, model, lens, software, encoder (for example Lavf), handler names, vendor codesMuxing app, writing app, encoder tags
Other tagsTitle, comment, author, Apple content ID, XMP, vendor boxesTitle, track names, all tags, attached files
Telemetry tracksTimed metadata tracks (handler type “meta”), for example GoPro GPS and sensor data (gpmd)Not applicable

Each removed piece is overwritten with zeros in place (in MP4 and MOV it becomes a “free” box; in WebM a “Void” element), so the rest of the file doesn’t move and nothing has to be re-encoded. That’s why the file keeps its size. Data that some phones append after the video, such as Samsung’s SEF trailer, is cut off.

What stays: the picture, the sound, subtitles, chapters, the rotation flag (so a portrait video still plays upright) and the video and audio settings a player needs. Some encoders also write a short note inside the compressed data itself: x264 stores its settings in the video stream, and FFmpeg’s AAC encoder stores its version in the first sound frame. Those stay, because removing them would mean re-encoding. They name the software and its options, not you or your device.

In our tests we added GPS, dates, camera and encoder tags to MP4, MOV and WebM files with FFmpeg, removed them here, then checked the results with FFmpeg: no location, date or device tags were left, and the hashes of every video and audio packet matched the original.

FAQ

How do I remove the location from a video?

Choose the video above and press Remove metadata. iPhone videos keep the location in a key called com.apple.quicktime.location.ISO6709, Android videos in a ©xyz tag; both are found, shown in the list and wiped. Check the list before and after: the page reads the new file back and says if anything is left.

Does removing metadata lower the quality?

No. The video and sound aren’t decoded or re-encoded. Only the metadata bytes change, and the download is the same size as your file, or slightly smaller if trailing data was cut off.

Do Instagram, TikTok or WhatsApp remove video metadata anyway?

We haven’t tested what each app keeps, and apps change. Some re-encode uploads and drop most tags; sending a file as a document or by email usually keeps everything. If it matters, remove the metadata yourself before you share the file.

Is there a file size limit?

No limit is set. The page reads only the file’s header and a few small pieces, and the download is put together from your original file plus the cleaned bytes, so the video isn’t loaded into memory. In our tests a 1.2 GB MP4 was cleaned in under a second in Chrome, Firefox and Safari’s engine.

Can I see the metadata without removing it?

Yes. Choose the video and read the list; nothing is changed until you press Remove metadata. For photos, use the EXIF Viewer.

Does this tool upload my video?

No. Your video is read and cleaned by your browser on your own device, and the new file is created there too. You can check: open your browser’s developer tools, go to the Network tab, and clean a video. No request carries it. The page counts visits and finished downloads (tool name only) with analytics that sets no cookies, and no file data is ever sent (see privacy).
